Samsung’s new W2014 is an outlandish Snapdragon 800-powered flip phonewith Android

So you thought the Asian onslaught of Android flip phones was a joke, huh? A passing fad, a whim, a bizarre eccentricity as many Westerners tend to describe Oriental customs they don’t get or resonate with.

Well, guess what, clamshells running on Google’s operating system are not going anywhere. Not only that, but they’re also getting stronger and stronger. Pricier too, albeit you can’t say you didn’t see that coming.

It was just last week Samsung rolled out the mid-range Galaxy Golden in India, asking close to $850 for it, so on that note, it shouldn’t come as a shock the spanking new W2014, which for all intents and purposes is the world’s fastest clamshell, is priced at about $1,640.

Packing quite a punch courtesy of a top-notch quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, the W2014 is at this time only scheduled to land in China. But don’t be surprised if Korea were to get it sometime soon. Meanwhile, folks on the Western hemisphere wouldn’t touch this thing with a ten-foot pole, so its limited availability will be for the best.

Aside from Snapdragon 800 power, the flip phone has a number of other features recommending it for a spot under the high-end mobile sun, like 2 GB RAM, 13 MP rear-facing camera and even 32 GB of built-in storage.

On the not so bright side, the dual screens that are becoming the norm in the (tiny) nice are fairly modest, measuring 3.7 inches and boasting 800 x 480 pixels resolution. The battery is a big small joke as well, being surely incapable of decent autonomy with just 1,900 mAh capacity.

In terms of software, things are about as cool as they could be, courtesy of pre-loaded Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Yet on the whole and with the risk of being called ignorant, I have to say the Samsung W2014 is an outlandish slab of silicon.

I mean, come on, how could anyone in his right mind pay over 1,600 clams for it when the dough can get you a Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4 and a decent meal? Maybe some pocket change, too. Think about it.
